Mt. Eccles is a Pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade
elementary school, providing a quality program for approximately 200
students. Our academic program includes technology, physical education,
art, music and 5th and 6th grade band. We use the expertise of 10
classroom teachers, a teacher for students who are limited
English proficient, 2 special education (including
speech) teachers, a physical education teacher, a remedial math/reading
teacher, several instructional aides, a half time music teacher and a
part time art instructor. We also have an active Site Council. Cordova
City Schools offer elementary students the opportunity to compete in
the State Spelling Bee, Geography Bee, Problem Solving and Battle of
the Books.
We also depend on the communities continued commitment
to education and the youth of Cordova for several enrichment programs.
Mt. Eccles works with the Native Village of Eyak to provide an
introduction to the Alutiiq language, the native language of Prince
William Sound. We work in unison with the City of Cordova who not only
provides the school building but also the use of the city library,
museum and pool, with staff. Mt. Eccles has a partnership with the
Prince William Sound Science Center, who provides the school with
monthly science hands on experiences and field trips. The local Forest
Service, Chamber of Commerce and the Science Center include the
elementary children in their sea week and shorebird activities. Junior
Achievement is active in the school, also. The community health nurse
provides maturation education for the 4th-6th grade students. The State
Troopers provide gun safety instruction for our students.
